Mongolian knife made by the workshop of Zhigzhit Bayaskhalanov

The heritage of the nomads is extensive. An expressive example of the appeal of Zhigzhit Bayaskhalanov's work to the origins of their ancestors is four Mongolian knives, or rather Mongolian sets. They are a combination of a Mongolian knife, scabbard and sticks. The basis of the artistic solution here is a game with contrasting colors and materials.

The workshop of Zhigzhit Bayaskhalanov creates Mongolian knives in the traditional style, inherent in those that have been born in the hands of skilled darkhans from time immemorial.

One of the distinguishing features of Mongolian knives is the presence of a flint on a hanger, although in modern interpretation the use of a flint and hanger may not be necessary.

Similar Mongolian knives in several forms are being recreated under the guidance of Zhigzhit Bayaskhalanov and are included in the main collection of his weapons work.

"Mongolian set with a suspension"

The "Mongolian hanging set" is a combination of a Mongolian knife, scabbard and sticks.

Mongolian knife materials: laminated steel, ebony, walrus tusk, silver, grenades. The scabbard is made of leather, ebony.

The whiteness of the walrus tusk is enhanced by the combination with dark wood, and the local placement of metal details maintains the balance of the product without overloading it with massive and pretentious elements.

In this Mongolian set, everything is thought out: there is the possibility of separate storage of sticks - they have separate compartments in the sheath, as well as one more - actually for the Mongolian knife. The scabbard is decorated as if with three rings, on which an ornamental pattern of a T-shaped shape of an endless wave is imprinted. The Mongolian set is complemented by an expressive pendant, which is firmly connected to the scabbard by a densely knitted chain.

The scabbard is balanced by an openwork suspension with graceful curly cuts, which is a layering of ornate curls with berries scattered like in a clearing - garnet stones, softening the severity of the lines inherent in the sheath and the Mongolian knife.

"Mongolian set No2"

"Mongolian set No. 2" is a combination of a Mongolian knife, sheath and sticks.

Mongolian knife materials: laminated steel, ebony, walrus tusk, silver, turquoise. The scabbard is made of leather, ebony.

The central idea of this work is to find a balance between bright contrasting colors and materials. This, for example, is a game between the whiteness of a walrus tusk and the rich dark base of the scabbard made of ebony. A wide three-dimensional ornamental floral pattern, which encircles the scabbard in a circle, adds a special sophistication to the object. Effectively studded with turquoise, it compositionally combines both the Mongolian knife and the sheath. Visually reminiscent of a medallion with drawings of vines, leaves and refers to the “Makara Tail”, which is often used in the halos of deities on Buddhist tanks, adding its own special mood to the Mongolian set.

At the same time, the remaining metal dies are only minimalistic in nature, emphasizing the depth of the main decorative element of the Mongolian knife.

The design of the scabbard also turns out to be interesting: the scabbard of the Mongolian set is rounded towards the end and expands to a rectangular shape at the mouth.

In the Mongolian set No. 2, there is a certain craving for the geometricity of the laid forms, these are circles, rectangles, they can be seen both in the Mongolian knife itself and in the sheath.

Монгольский набор №3

Mongolian No 3

Mongolian set . 3 is a group of several items: Mongolian knife, sticks, scabbard

Materials: laminated steel, ebony, walrus tusk, silver turquoise. The scabbard is made of leather and ebony.

Mongolian set No. 3 is stylistically similar to Mongolian set No. 2: a massive scabbard, a wide decorative element on the scabbard, a leather strap for easy fastening of the scabbard to the belt.

Here, more rounded outlines are used, the shape of a rectangle stands out only on the Mongolian knife itself, becoming a logical completion of the handle.

The decor of this Mongolian knife, or rather the whole set, also uses a scattering of stones: the handle of the Mongolian knife is decorated with turquoise both on the sides and on the pommel.

Mongolian set with hanging №4

Mongolian hanging set #4 combines two types of Mongolian knives and a hanging sheath.

Materials: laminated steel, ebony, walrus tusk, silver, grenades. The scabbard is made of leather, ebony.

Here, sticks are already disappearing in this set, but a second smaller blade appears, suggesting a completely logical use of two objects: they cut prey with a large blade, and ate with a small one.

The massive pendant of the Mongolian set also draws attention to itself, the design of which is built in a very interesting way: a skilfully detailed medallion depicting a dragon's head is concisely connected to a three-dimensional figurine of a raven, whose beak firmly holds the main half-weight ring. Another detail of the composition is a walrus tusk ball, and a tightly woven thick chain completes the decorative suspension solution.

Both Mongolian knives are decorated with grenades, walrus tusk inserts and thin metal plates, which form the image of each knife as a whole.

On the scabbard there are overlays in the form of ornamentally rich patterns enclosed in rectangles. The geometric theme is also developed here, which can be seen not only in the scabbard, but also in the Mongolian knives.

Each of these Mongolian sets can be a great gift for a business partner, a friend for an anniversary, decorate the interior of the house or become a prominent part of the office space.
